Brandon Coleman Bennett Miller |
Praised as a “wonderful composer,” a “sophisticated player,” and “one of the most unique guitar voices to emerge over the last decade,” Brandon Coleman is a renowned guitarist, composer, and arranger known for his intricate, cinematic style. Based in Cincinnati, OH, Coleman draws inspiration from his Appalachian roots and influences from jazz, rock, and orchestral music, crafting a voice all his own.
Coleman’s latest release, Trust Fall, marks the debut of the Brandon Coleman Trio and showcases his fearless approach to jazz through raw, unfiltered performances. Featuring longtime collaborators Matt Wiles on upright bass and Jeff Mellott on drums, the album captures the trio’s deep chemistry and commitment to spontaneous expression. A nod to classic live jazz trio recordings like Bill Evans’ Live at the Village Vanguard and Keith Jarrett’s Live at the Deer Head Inn, Trust Fall comprises both jazz standards and fully improvised compositions, recorded without set arrangements or preconceived structures. This trust in the music allows each track, including “Alone Together,” “Sonnymoon for Two,” and three improvised “Trust Fall” pieces, to unfold naturally, embodying the essence of jazz in its purest form.
Coleman’s wide-ranging career includes performances with his own groups—the Brandon Coleman Trio and Quartets—as well as fusion powerhouse Spherical Agenda, Grammy winning vocalist Nicole Zuraitis, Grammy Winner Drummer, Composer and Arranger Dan Pugach, Emmy Award-winning cellist and singer-songwriter Ben Sollee, and the alt-Americana band Barnweaver. He has also recorded for television, including guitar parts for DC Comics’ Legends of Tomorrow, and has shared the stage with esteemed musicians like Jamey Haddad (Paul Simon), Sam Blakeslee and countless others.
Coleman’s versatility extends into orchestral music, having recorded and performed with The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, The Cincinnati Opera, The Cincinnati Pops, and The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra. His recent orchestral arrangements were also performed by The Louisville Orchestra, demonstrating his reach beyond jazz and into the broader musical landscape.
A seasoned performer, Coleman has appeared at notable venues including Smalls, The Blue Wisp Jazz Club, Bar Next Door, 55 Bar, Club Bonafide, Cliff Bell’s, and Rudy’s Jazz Room. His festival appearances span international events, from Ecuador’s Loja Jazz Festival to the CBGB Festival and Columbus Jazz & Rib Fest.
As an educator, Coleman has conducted clinics and masterclasses at numerous universities across the Americas, including Capital University, Sonora Guitar Institute, and institutions such as UNAH-VS (San Pedro Sula, Honduras), UNAH (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), UDLA (Quito, Ecuador), Universidad de Loja (Loja, Ecuador), West Virginia State University, Morehead State University, University of Virginia, and Belmont University. His teaching reflects his commitment to sharing his expertise and fostering a deeper understanding of improvisation and performance with musicians around the world.
Coleman endorses Maton Guitars, GYR Guitars and Comins Guitars.
